Royal Challengers Bangalore broke years of jinx and won its first title across franchise leagues when it beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to claim the second season of the Women’s Premier League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday.
RCB made easy work of their 114-run chase against DC to lift their maiden WPL title. A wonderful first innings performance from RCB’s spin-attack helped them clinch their first-ever trophy as a franchise.
DC skipper Lanning won the toss for her side and opted to bat first in the final. Lanning and Shafali got DC off to a flying start, posting the joint-highest powerplay score in WPL 2024.
After bundling out Delhi for 113, RCB reached 115/2 in 19.2 overs. Richa Ghosh (17) hit the match-winning four, wrapping up proceedings with Ellyse Perry (35).
RCB got a strong start in their run chase, courtesy of Sophie Devine’s 32. The opener fell to Shikha Pandey and failed to build on her start. Meanwhile, Smriti Mandhana (31) lost her wicket to Minnu Mani.
Mandhana says, “Feeling hasn’t sitll sunk in. Hard for me to come out with expressions. One thing I’ll say is I’m proud of the bunch.
Mandhana has a message for the fans – the most loyal fanbase. One statement that always comes up is Ee Sala Cup Namde. Now it’s Ee Sala Cup Namdu. Kannada is not my first language but it was important to say it for the fans.”
